We are delighted to thank hundreds of recent volunteers at APC. Groups from Google, Saint Mary's College, the United Way, Chevron, Wachovia, Wells Fargo, Leapfrog, Clif Bar and Kaiser Permanente generously donated over 1800 hours of volunteer time since this summer. |
These volunteers helped transform a vacant lot into a new urban farm at 2600 Barbers Point Road, Alameda. They also worked with Ploughshares Nursery to break ground on a low-water demonstration garden, and helped the Growing Youth Project get our community garden ready for winter.
| Their efforts do not go unnoticed by residents here at APC. "They make it a better place to live," said Christine Shea, an On-the-Job Trainee who works for APC. Shea, "appreciate[s] their sincerity. They come here eager, and you can see that they care and want to help. And they do make a difference." |

| APC Selects New Executive Director |
|
|
The Board of Directors of APC is pleased to announce that Doug Biggs has been appointed APC's new Executive Director, effective immediately. Biggs has been working as the Development Director at APC for the last four years, and has been a resident of Alameda for the last 20 years. |
APC is the largest supportive housing program for homeless families in the East Bay, serving 500 residents, including almost 300 children and youth.
Mr. Biggs brings to the Executive Director position over 30 years of experience in community development, ranging from work with at-risk youth programs in the Bay Area to a stint in the Peace Corps and Care International, working on community development activities in rural Nepal.
According to Rev. Roger Bauer, Chair of APC's Board of Directors, "the Board, staff and residents just completed a strategic planning process, and knew that we needed someone dedicated to the mission and the community to lead the agency forward. Doug fits that need very well. It speaks to the stability of our organization, and our belief in community empowerment that we were able to promote from within for this position."
According to Mr. Biggs, he is taking over at an exciting time for the agency. "The redevelopment of Alameda Point looks like it will finally be moving forward, providing new economic opportunities for our residents, and our existing social enterprises. Ploughshares Nursery and the Cycles of Change Bike Shop are becoming well established and supported by the community."
Regarding the challenges of running an organization in tough economic times, Mr. Biggs said that, "unfortunately, the demand for our services has never been greater. More and more families are becoming homeless, and many more are only a paycheck away from losing their homes. We have already shown that supportive housing is an effective and cost efficient way of helping people overcome homelessness, and we hope that our donors continue to value the need to help families get off the street and back on their feet."

| New Carpet for Kids Homework Room! |
|

|
We would like to thank Steve Wald at Carpet Express (511 23rd Avenue, Oakland, CA) for generously donating new carpet to replace flooring that was damaged in a recent flood. The homework room has never looked better! |
Thanks to Carpet Express and volunteers from Wachovia who helped us clear the room, our tutoring program had a great start to the school year.

| Cycles APC Hosts Family Bike Rides |
|

|
This fall, Cycles of Change APC is hosting a series of family rides for our residents. Since most residents do not have access to a car, biking is a great alternative for getting around. |
Cycles APC is hosting family bike rides and teaching adults and families about bike safety so that they can ride safe while they run errands and make local trips.
